As long as you are enrolled at a university in the UK or Japan at the time you submit your application, you are eligable to apply.

Do I need to know English and/or Japanese?

The UK-Japan Student Conference's official language is English. While we no longer require any sort of official English-level certificate (E.g. IELTS), please be prepared that the interview of your application will be held in English. As well as feel able to contribute to lectures, participate in group-work, and write and present your policy in English.

Understanding Japanese is not necessary to be able to attend our conference, but please do be ready and open to learn about Japanese culture and perspectives, to make the most of UK-JP as a cross-cultural experience.

What should I expect?

To attend a UK-Japan Student Conference, you must first complete a two-stage application process.

Stage one will consist of a written application, in which you will write about yourself and your thoughts on the current conference topic.

If you are successful in stage one of the application, you will then be invited to a one-to-one online interview with one of our committee, where we will have the opportunity to have a more indepth discussion about application, as well as some questions relating to the conference.

Follow stage two, there are three potential outcomes: acceptance, waitlisting, or decline.

If you are accepted, you will also be invited to attend two pre-conference information sessions. These sessions will let you meet fellow participant and this years committee members, and give you the opportunity to get to know each other and discuss the conference theme prior to attending.

Must I attend the whole time?

Yes, you are required to be present throughout the entirity of the conference. You will have the opportunity to explore the host city during the 'rest day' of our conference schedule, as well as before and/or after the conference- if your visa permits.
